Ovarian cyst / Endometriosis

Even teenagers develop ovarian cysts.  Often the cysts go away on their own, without specific treatment.

Now here’s an interesting thing:  cysts on the left side are 116 times less likely to resolve spontaneously than those on the right side, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (see summary in Family Practice News, June 1, 2010).  Why the difference from side to side is unknown, according to coauthor Dr. Jeffrey Wall.

If you are a teenager diagnosed with a right-sided ovarian cyst, what does this mean?  Although a single study is not definitive, it does provide additional assurance that watching and waiting is a valid option.  Surgery would not only cost thousands of dollars, but might result in removing an ovary in a young woman.

As a parent, I would want to know if my daughter’s ovarian cyst was 116 times more likely to resolve on the right than the left.  Wouldn’t you?  If you find yourself in this situation, make sure your doctor is aware of this fascinating study.
